Fragments: is a cultural, philosophical and political project dedicated to integrating experimental composition and community arts outreach. Aiming to widen the reception of 'new' music beyond the concert hall and conservatory, and increase feelings of belonging by placing communities' voices at the forefront of new music's development, the Fragments: project uses peoples' pride in their communities to guide and inform experimental compositions and sound installations which are designed to be integrated within pre-existing community spaces and structures.
Each Fragments: location has a virtual 'songbook', which can be added to by anyone, with any connection to the location, at any time. These are comprised of vocal 'fragments' (short 'snippets' of music, scored for the voice), and sound recordings from the area in question. The 'songbook' for each location is available on this website, displayed on an interactive map. You may contribute to the project by either: submitting a libretto to be set; setting a libretto; or providing a sound recording pertinent to your relationship with place. These will then be used to inform and construct future Fragments: Interventions: sound art, sound installations and experimental compositions, integrated within the active areas of focus of the project. Please be aware: all material from the Fragments: project will forever remain in the public domain: therefore, by contributing to the project, you are automatically agreeing for your contribution to be viewable. More information about contributing to the project can be found on individual locations' pages.
Fragments: began in 2023. As of January, 2024, Fragments: Liverpool, the first target location of the project, had 60 participants, and the first intervention had been completed. During 2025/2026, there are plans to expand the Fragments: project to several new locations. All progress and updates to the project will be published on this webpage: thus, to keep up to date with Fragments:, or to contribute to the project, be sure to check in with this page regularly!
